I'm gonna need a new hat...

swerve and I had awesome seats for the Bruins-Leafs game last night. I swung by her place after work, hung out with Cricket a bit while she put her face on, then we hit the T for the trip to the Garden.

Blue liner Dennis Wideman opened the scoring with a slap shot from the point on the power play and then rookie Blake Wheeler, taking the ice with his new number for the first time, added another PP goal two minutes later on a nice tip of another Wideman shot. Five minutes into the second Wheeler added his second of the game on a beautiful feed from Marco Sturm. I looked at the clock, realized there was still 35 minutes to play, and started wondering. It's funny, swerve and I had been joking about stuffing old hats in her bag to have on hand "just in case" so we could toss hats but still hold on to "our" hats.

In the third period the Leafs made it a 4-2 game and pulled their goalie with about two minutes left in a last desperate attempt to tie the score. With a minute left Sturm found an open Wheeler on the blue line. Wheels skated it across the red line, got to about 20 feet from swerve and I, and fired off a shot.

I'm pretty sure my hat was the first to hit the ice and it settled nicely on the blue line in front of us. I really liked that hat, but it was lost to a good cause.

I'm either an idiot or very tired

Perhaps both.

I wear contacts. Daily disposable ones to be exact. I love them and am glad I made the switch but sometimes I wonder about them. And me.

This morning when I put the lenses in the right eye felt a little weird. This is not all that surprising; sometimes one lens is not seated quite right or there's a speck of dust on it or whatever but normally it gets better by the time I get to work. This morning, however, it felt weird the entire trip in. I couldn't quite focus on the sudoku/crossword in the free rag that's handed out on the T. So I figured when I got to my office I'd pop out the lenses, put on my glasses, and go on with my life. Good plan, right?

So I pop out the lenses and put on my glasses (that was, after all, the plan) and head to my weekly lab meeting. Except something still isn't quite right. Things aren't quite as sharp as they normally are. I spent a few minutes taking off my glasses and looking at the journals across the room and comparing them to what they looked like with my glasses on. No noticeable difference. I am, however, surprised that I can read the titles without my glasses on. I try to read notes I've made and they're little fuzzy. But the main point is there's no real difference between glasses on and glasses off. Now I'm starting to wonder what could have happened to my eyes overnight. Am I just still not quite awake? I got my flu shot yesterday, am I slowly going blind? Did somebody secretly replace my glasses with <del>Folgers Crystals</del> plain glass? The point is that something was pretty obviously not right. Naturally I did what any true man would have done - I shrugged my shoulders and forgot about it.

So here we are 3 hours later and my eyes are really starting to annoy me. This is not just normal "I've been staring at Excel for too long" bugging either - I'm starting to get a little bit of a headache. So I take off my glasses and start rubbing my eyes ... and a contact pops out of my left eye. Ummmm. What? So I futz with the right eye and a contact pops out of that one as well. Interesting. Now I know I didn't have my coffee today but I'm pretty sure I remember taking out my contacts before I put on my glasses this morning. So to the trash can I go. Fortunately I've only thrown away a couple pieces of paper (I know, I should recycle. Bad me.) so it's easy to search the bag. And there they are - two dried up contact lenses. Very interesting. I ponder this discovery. I confirm that in addition to these two dried up lenses in my trash I have two freshly removed lenses in my hand. I'm left with only one conclusion.

Apparently last night I forgot to take out my lenses when I went to bed. And then when I went to put lenses in this morning I managed to put new lenses on top of old lenses. No wonder my eyes were bugging me, I had two lenses on both eyes. And then I somehow managed to remove one set of lenses while leaving yesterday's set on my eyes. That's a pretty neat trick. But now all is well and they lived happily ever after.

Bruins. The Bruins.

Just got home from the Bruins home opener. Not a bad way to shake off last night's Sox game (bah). Tired and sleepy but a fun night (as always) with swerve. A pretty good game that the Bruins had every chance to win but couldn't quite get a second goal to pull ahead. And once again they lose th shootout. Sigh. It's a point which is nice but it woul dbe nice if they started getting that second point now and then.

But for now I'm tired and have a bit of ringing in the ears (great crowd!) so it's time for bed.

On to the ALCS...

Behind the awesome left arm of Jon Lester the Sox knocked off the 100 win LAAofA last night to advance to the ALCS to face traditional division rival ... Tampa? Oh good. More cowbell.

The best part is I was one of the lucky winners of the ALCS ticket lottery and, because I have some smart friends, was able to get through the VWR hell in under a minute and score some sweet tickets to home game 1 (game 3) on Monday. Last year swerve and I were lucky enough to win the ALDS lottery but this is the first time either of us will be at an ALCS game. Also, the baseball gods really shined on us because the game will be on Monday. And because of the Columbus Day holiday it'll be a 4:30 start. Sweet! It'll still be chilly but certainly better than the last two nights at Fenway where the temperature dropped to the 40s. Good times!

Or, you know, not.

Science is so freaking cool. It's been more than a few years since I've had physics but it's always fascinated me. I don't pretend to understand all of what's going on with the LHC but I get a decent amount of it. And I can't wait to see what we learn. Also, The Science Channel (now in HD!) had a special on it the other night that I have DVR'd and ready for me to watch at my leisure. Possibly Thursday night since the Sox have an off night. (Other programs in my queue include "Secrets of the Moon Landing", the Dirty Jobs episode where Mike goes to an alpaca farm, and a special on the Dubai ski resort. I am such a dork.)

Related: The The LHC rap cracks my ass up (work warning - it's a youtube link)

In other news I managed to pull the wrong lever for my coffee this morning. Instead of my normal New England Breakfast Blend I have Blueberry something or other. That was a bit of an interesting discovery. At least it nicely compliments my blueberry muffin. (Hello, muffin, you look nice today. Looks like you packed in some extra blueberries this morning!)

In other other news life is pretty damn good. :)

Happy Merry Berry Month of May

Hey look! I still have a journal! I've even been keeping busy and doing fun things in the last two or so months, I just can't seem to get myself to sit down and write about it. Bah. Oh well, maybe I'll go back and fill in details eventually.

The quick version:
Had a wonderful trip to FL in Feb. I had tried to plan it so that there would be a shuttle launch (my sister's new place is like an hour from the Cape) but because of delays it didn't work out. Instead we took a drive down alligator alley to the Everglades and spent some time communing with nature. Holy cow was that a fun trip. I'm kind of an astronomy geek and it was really cool to be in the middle of nowhere and see all the stars. The sunroof was a nice addition. If you ever get a chance to take an airboat trip through the Everglades I would highly recommend it. I would also recommend stopping at the observation decks and spending some time watching the gators. They're absolutely fascinating creatures and it's pretty cool to stand less than five feet away from them. Maybe I'll get off my ass and upload some pictures at some point.

The Bruins had a great end of season run and an even better playoff run. In a series no one gave them any chance to win they forced a seventh game and caught the attention of the city. And my Pens are doing pretty good for themselves as well (knock on wood).

The Sox traveled to two countries before coming home to pass out the new championship rings. This was the first time in seven or eight years I haven't been able to get tickets to Opening Day but swerve and I got together to watch at my place and with as cold as it was and the length of the ceremony/game we both agreed it wasn't necessarily a bad way to spend the day.

I replaced my (old and gross) blinds with fancy new ones that allow light to filter in but still allow for some privacy. They make such a huge difference; it's awesome walking out in the morning and having it be so nice and bright. (Big ups to swerve for some gentle nudging to finally do it and especially for coming up when the guy was here with samples. It's always nice to have another opinion, especially one I value as much as I do hers.)

Anyway, it's been a fun couple of months. And looks like things will continue that way too. Good times.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to pick up some strawberries to celebrate the merry berry month of May. Mmmmm. Strawberries.

Hey, it's good advice

This amuses me greatly.

Signs of panic over 'Chinglish' in Beijing
By Aislinn Simpson
For years, badly translated signs have had the Englishman abroad in stitches. But for tourism officials in Beijing, a city preparing for the arrival of millions of visitors for the Olympic Games in August, the problem is far from funny.
It has also instructed the city's 4,000 unrated hotels to translate their names, service hours, room rates, menus and notices into accurate English.
Restaurateurs have been given a list of the proper English names for the most commonly mistranslated items, including "virgin chicken" for a young chicken dish, "steamed crap" instead of crab, and "burnt lion's head" describing Chinese pork meatballs.

For the full article (and more signs!) click here

snow and sand

I took advantage of the nice weather today and went for a quick walk on the beach. After the snow we got on Friday it was a really pretty view. I love seeing the snow and sand juxtaposed and that you can clearly make out the high tide line.

I also took along some old bread I needed to get rid of.
Yes, this is my job

Our latest abstract - submitted to the 2008 International Conference on AIDS in Mexico City

Durability of HIV antibodies (HIVab) in semen contained in condoms: A time-temperature trial.
Patricia Case, Adam Sussman, Frederick P. Bowman, Deborah Anderson

Background: Testing semen found in condoms discarded in public sex environments may be a way to capture previously underreported HIV seroprevalence in difficult to access populations. Assessing the effects of time and temperature on the durability of HIVab captured in discarded condoms is an important first methodological step.
Methods: A sample of confirmed HIV-positive (n=21) and HIV-negative men (n=5) were recruited from a community clinic. Participants provided three semen samples, one per week, over a three-week period by ejaculating into a condom. Condoms were subjected to three temperature conditions; 1) room temperature at 22oC; 2) high heat and humidity at 32oC/ 95% humidity; and 3) refrigeration at 4o; over a 144 hour time period. 100ul of semen was removed from the condoms at baseline, 24, 48, 72 and 144 hours, diluted 1:10 in PBS, and frozen for future testing. Post-144 hours, all condoms were lavaged with 1ml of PBS and tested. We report on baseline and lavage testing. Samples were tested for detectable HIVab using the Genetic Systems rLAV EIA (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Hercules, CA).
Results: Aliquots from the baseline and post-144 hour lavage time conditions under all three temperature conditions reliably had detectable HIVab, compared to the HIV negative controls. Evaporation of semen was assessed at 144 hours; even when semen had completely evaporated, the lavage wash of the condom yielded samples that could be reliably tested for HIV.
Conclusions: HIVabs in semen are durable over a wide range of time and temperature conditions, even when semen is dried. While results of testing semen contained in discarded condoms can only represent prevalence among those who use condoms, this is a feasible method that may be useful as an adjunct method in evaluating HIV prevalence in otherwise difficult to access populations in diverse climates.

I love Center Ice

The Bruins played an uninspiring 60 minutes of hockey, losing 4-2 to the Sabres. Sigh. In between catching election results (I voted, did you?) I flipped between the late games.

Ducks-Stars went to OT and then took 8 exciting round in the shootout before the Stars earned the extra point. I switched over to 'Yotes-Flames to find a 3-2 game (last time I saw a score it was 3-0) with under a minute left. The Flames tied it with 8.8 seconds left on an absolute snipe of a shot by Iggy. Now they're in OT. Fun stuff for a puck head. I just wish the games were in HD. (/spoiled)

*edit* holy cow! with under 30 seconds left in OT a Yotes D-man sweeps the puck off the goal line to save the game. And then the outlet pass led to a 2 on none that Kipper made a great save on (fortunately for him there was no traffic). Then there was a scrap after the horn and now we're going to a shootout. Fun!

I just ordered a set of these plates. I've been on a "need new dishes" kick for two or three years now. Mine have quite the history (they originally belonged to my parents, then they were at college with my sister, then they were at college with me, and noe they've been in Boston with me for the last 10 years) and are really starting to show their age but I haven't been able to find something that really grabbed my attention. A week or so ago swerve and I were looking at something for her place on cb2.com and these ones managed to do just that. Then I saw the (surprisingly low) price and I was even more intrigued. After spending a week thinking about them I decided to take swerve's (and my mother's (great minds)) advice and ordered one of each flavor to see if I like them enough to buy a full set.

Besides liking the look of them I really like the size of the bowl. I eat a lot of salad and my bowls just aren't big enough for anything more than a piece or two of lettuce and a couple veggies so I wind up using a serving bowl which stinks. Plus they're dishwasher- and microwave-safe. I don't have a dishwasher but I sure do have a microwave so that's pretty important. I Think I'm going to be pretty happy with them but I guess we will see in 5 to 7 days. I just hope they're still in stock then. That would be most upsetting if they were gone.

Happy Birthday Lego!

50 years ago today the first lego rolled off the assembly line. Here's a pretty nifty link to a lego timeline and the original patent for a "toy building block" (filed July 28, 1958). So simple and yet so wonderful. I can't tell you how many hours of my childhood were spent with legos. Sometimes I even followed the directions that came with the kits but normally I'd be off making my own building or boat or spaceship or whatever. Legos (along with my erector set) are a one of the main reasons I started college as a civil engineering major. Sometimes I still think I should have stayed in CE. Or maybe architecture. But that's a story for another day. Today belongs to legos. :)

You may have noticed your favorite search engine has also joined the celebration. (If you're bored, do a GIS for "lego". Some of the creations are just plain amazing.)

The first day back after a long weekend should be a half day. You can either come in late or leave early, whichever you prefer. When I run for ruler of the known universe this will be one of the main planks of my platform. It polls particular well in the "lazy middle aged men" demographic.

I just had some soup though. Soup makes everything better.

At 4:00 NBC will be airing Fashion on Ice. What is Fashion on Ice you ask? Good question. According to the program guide, "the ice becomes a runway as top skaters showcase the ensembles of several designers while soprano Sarah Brightman performs."

So... I mean... just... yeah.

The early reviews are in:
"OH MY GOD. trashtacular." ~swerve

For the record I learned about it because they showed a promo during the hockey game.
I can see!

I got my glasses twelve years ago. No, not my first pair of glasses. My only pair of glasses. This hasn't been much of a problem since I switched to contacts in 2002, but recently I've become more and more envious of swerve's ability to just toss on a pair of glasses and go. Sure I could just use my glasses but it would be nice to have a pair that isn't 12 years and 2 prescriptions old and still has both ear pieces still attached. I'm not really hung up on fashion but a man has his limits. Plus I never really liked how they looked in the first place. (And in case you were wondering, apparently the earpiece is officially called "the temple arm. Yes, I googled it.)

Also, I currently wear contacts that I'm supposed to change every two weeks (cough cough) but have been very intrigued by the idea of daily contacts. I love the idea of being able to lie in bed and read or watch tv or whatever and then just yank them out and toss them (not on the floor, that would be gross) when I'm ready to go to sleep.

So to make a long story short (too late!) last Tuesday (the 8th) I went in to get my eyeballs checked. My old eye doctor has moved on (with patients like me who could blame her) and since swerve's recommended dentist worked out so nicely I went with her guy. And once again she was right; he was great. They did all the normal tests (which is more clear, 1 or 2? 2 or 3?) and then also did this thing called optomap that was fascinating. It uses a scanning laser to create this beautiful 3D image of your eye that they can use to look for retinal or blood vessel damage and other things that I forget but seemed important. I got my new prescription (went from 1.25 to 1.50 in both eyes, can I tell you how much I love that both eyes are the same?) and he gave me some dailies to wear for a week to try out and told me to come back in a week to see how they felt and for him to take a look at how they were fitting. By this time it had gotten a little late and I was ready to be home so since I knew I'd be coming back in a week I decided to do the glasses thing then. Plus swerve said she'd come along to look at frames and it's always nice to get a second opinion, especially when it's from someone whose opinion you trust as much as I do hers.

Fast forward to this past Tuesday. I've worn my dailies for a week and loved them. The only thing I don't like about them is the amount of plastic I'm going to be throwing away, which reminds me I have to look into where I can take them to be recycled (they're #5 which apparently is polypropylene). So that's one thing decided, I know I need to order a bunch of contacts. Now I just need to decide on frames. I had looked at the selection online and a couple pairs stood out so at least I had something to start with but it's hard to get a real idea until I actually put them on my face. So I left work a little early (woo!), hopped on a bus, and sped across town. Dr Norden did a quick check of the contacts and declared them good to go and pointed me to a counter where I could buy them. Because of rebates and discounts and all that fun stuff it turned out I could save a decent amount of money by buying a year's supply. Okay, why not. So now I have 8 huge boxes of contacts that need a place to live. Sigh. Guess "cleaning linen closet" just got added to the list. Swerve walked in as I was picking up the boxes so we walked over to the wall of glasses. I tried a couple on, she picked a couple, and we managed to narrow it to two pairs, one of which was the pair that originally stood out to me online. Sold. It was great having her there to look at frames with me. We seem to have similar tastes in most things and I certainly value and respect her opinion and was pretty sure she wouldn't let me buy frames that were clownlike on me. She even got some random people in the store to give their opinions, which was awesome. And of course everything is just plain more fun when she's around.

After the deciding on the frames came the measuring of the eyes for how far my pupils were from my nose. Or something like that, I'm not exactly sure what it was but they said it was important. Frankly I think they just wanted me to look dumb by having me look into this viewmaster-like thing. And I don't really need any help with looking dumb. They said if I wanted to wait an hour or so I could have them that night but it was getting late and swerve and I had plans to hang out and watch some hockey so we went on our merry way. The guy working in the back yelling about how he was going to be out of there at 7:10 and no later and if it wasn't done then tough may have played a small part in the decision as well. I've waited this long, another day won't hurt me. Besides, it meant I got to leave work a little early again yesterday (woo!). So I jumped on the bus again and walked over to the big "pickup" sign that they have hanging from the ceiling. A couple minor adjustments later and I was on my way with my fancy new glasses.

I'm sure I probably freaked out a few people on the T last night because I was using them as target practice, for lack of a better word. Stupid things like facing straight ahead and looking at them out of the side of my eyes. Then looking at them. Then looking more diagonally out the corner of the lens. Then back again. It was just a little different than what (and how) I'm used to seeing. I wore them last night to watch tv and laze around and wore them again today to see what they'd feel like at work. The early verdict? Much love. They're very comfortable and light and hardly feel like I have them on at all. Still a little weird feeling while looking at things to my side or below (like my keyboard) but I'm sure I'll get used to that. And I'm sure my eyes will thank me for the occasional break from contacts.

Back to Thanksgiving, Part I

I really suck at this keeping a journal thing. I kind of feel bad about writing at work but then I get home and the last thing I want to do is write. My brain shuts itself off somewhere around Maverick (that'll make sense to one person at least) and im chats with swerve are about the limit of my writing ability. Maybe I'm thinking about things too much and I should just jot down a few words every day and not care if it's written well or makes sense or is at all interesting. (Gee, what a novel idea. Over thinking something to death and never actually doing it almost never happens to me.) Anyway, bah. So today it'll be a quick explanation of my previous entry. Nothing like a cliffhanger to keep them coming back. Or something like that.

Anyway, Thanksgiving.

Saturday was the drive. (I'll spare you the details for now, but there's another half written entry that might come out in a day or two when I clean up the desktop). It's a nice little drive, a hair over 600 miles. I love it. I love to drive. Once I hit 3 hours or so I zone out and the mind just kind of wanders and I always arrive at my destination feeling really energized. I think I drive my parents nuts because I'm always up and walking around and looking at things and doing pretty much anything but sitting still. So that was fun. VT had a big game with Miami during the day and since I listened to my ipod the whole way I managed a score blackout. My parents taped the game for me and did their best to avoid a score as well so we had dinner and watched the game. Good times.

Sunday was the 18th century. The events leading to the Whiskey Rebellion took place a couple of miles from where I grew up and my parents still live. For 4 or 5 years now (since they retired) my parents have been part of a group who dress in period clothing and "live" as the Miller family did. Dad is part time blacksmith, cooper, farmer, whatever. He's made his own Pennsylvania long rifle and was actually shown firing it "at Indians" on an episode of History Detectives. Mom is into candle making and herb usage and frontier cooking. It's not Williamsburg or Sturbridge big, but they have had as many as 400 people come through for some of their "special" days. This particular Sunday was "An 18 th Century Thanksgiving" and they invited friends and family to come to the dinner they'd spent the day preparing in front of guests. Man was it good, I have some pictures at home that I'll upload and link, hopefully this weekend.

Monday was the shopping and golf. Shopping is boring. One of the reasons I drive home for Thanksgiving is that it's really easy to dump my golf clubs in the trunk in the off case it's warm enough to play a couple rounds (it normally is). So dad and I braved the cold and hit up the local muni. On the second hole I felt a little twinge in my lower back. Nothing real major, I hadn't swung a club in months and figured I just overdid my swing a bit (I tend to do that). I finished the round and other than another twinge here and there during swings and a bit of pain when I would bend to tee up the ball or pick it out of the hole I was fine. It got progressively worse during the night, most of which was spent on the floor with either a heating pad or massage thingy on it. Getting up was an adventure, I'd have to roll over, get on all fours, and then crawl to a couch and use it to help pull myself up. Advil helped a bit and it seemed like it was just another typical muscle pull that would hurt for a day or two but be fine. We even talked about golfing again on Tuesday.

Tuesday was the pain and the trip to the er. I woke up Tuesday morning with a little bit of pain but nothing I couldn't deal with. Talked some more about golfing but it was cold and windy and supposed to be nicer later in the week so we decided to putz around the house and plan on going then. By noon I was in some pretty serious pain. At one point it took me so long to get up off of the floor to go to the bathroom that I thought I was going to have a really embarrassing moment. Then I thought I was going to be stuck on the toilet. I started to stand up and my back totally seized up so that it hurt to go up or down. I finally managed to stand up and get dressed and walked around a little bit. Kind of. Not only could I not walk upright but my torso was shifted about 10 degrees to the right - dad said I looked like a ship taking on water. There was talk of doctors and the er but we I was having none of it, it was just a sore back and would be fine.

(To be continued)
